The Rose Mary Hagadus & Helen C. Hinchman Memorial Exhibit was established to foster the art of Pennsylvania artists. This exhibition is open to all college/university juniors or seniors majoring in art, or any established artist in the counties of Blair, Cambria, Somerset, Indiana, and Westmoreland. Entries shall be limited to two (2) submissions in the representational works of painting, sculpture, or works on paper.
Clayton Merrell grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, and Ciudad Guayana, Venezuela. He studied painting and printmaking at the Yale School of Art, where he earned an MFA in 1995. He was awarded a Fulbright Grant for research and creative work in Oaxaca, Mexico in 1996-97. His work is exhibited widely, at venues including: the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Washington DC; Concept Art Gallery, Pittsburgh PA; the A+D Gallery, Chicago; the Westmoreland Museum of Art; and the Chautauqua Institution, Chautauqua NY. His work is in the collections of the American Embassy in Belmopan, Belize, the Smithsonian Museum, the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art, the U.S. Department of the Interior, and numerous private and corporate collections. He was the 2005 Artist of the Year at The Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, and in 2016 was named Creator-of-the-Year by the Pittsburgh Technology Council. He has received awards and fellowships from MASS MoCA, the Heinz Foundation, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Skowhegan, Millay Colony for the Arts, Blue Mountain Center, Vermont Studio Center, ProArts, Artists Image Resource, and Center for the Arts in Society. During 2004-05 he was a fellow at the Roswell Artist-In-Residence Foundation in Roswell, New Mexico. In 2015, the Pittsburgh International Airport completed construction of a 69,000 square foot terrazzo floor based on his design. He has been commissioned to expand on that design as part of the Terminal Modernization Project now under construction. He is currently the Dorothy L. Stubnitz Professor of Art at Carnegie Mellon University.
An Opening Reception and Awards Presentation will be held at the Community Arts Center of Cambria County on Thursday, August 7, 2025, 6:00 - 8:00 P.M.
Awards presented will be the Rose Mary Hagadus Legacy Award ($500), Helen C. Hinchman Platinum Award ($1,000), Helen C. Hinchman Legacy Award ($900), and Helen C. Hinchman Education Award ($600).
Works must be brought to the Community Arts Center of Cambria County, 1217 Menoher Boulevard in Johnstown on Thursday, July 31, 2025 between 1:00 P.M. - 5:00 P.M., Friday, August 1, 2025 between 1:00 P.M. - 6:00 P.M., or Saturday, August 2, 2025 between 10:00 A.M. - 2:00 P.M. After jurying is completed, rejected works must be picked up on Wednesday, August 6, 2025 or Thursday, August 7, 2025, between 10:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M.
Subject matter should be suitable for public display; the juror makes all decisions regarding suitability. Submitted works must be original; no reproductions, giclees, or works done under instruction, or using copyrighted works, or images protected by copyright will be accepted. All work must be properly framed or finished and ready to install. No sawtooth hangers will be accepted. Although care is exercised in handling works, the Community Arts Center of Cambria County assumes no responsibility for damages or loss. Submission of artwork constitutes agreement with conditions set forth herein and is considered a commitment to show. No work can be removed before the close of the exhibition.
At the conclusion of the show, all exhibited work must be picked up Saturday, August 23, 2025 between 10:00 A.M. - 2:00 P.M. or Monday, August 25, 2025 between 10:00 A.M. - 6:00 P.M. If you cannot pick up in person, please arrange to have someone pick up for you and contact the Community Arts Center with the person’s name. All works that are not picked up by the designated dates will become the property of the Community Arts Center.
There is a limit of two (2) entries per artist. Non-members of the Community Arts Center will have a fee of $25 for two (2) entries; Community Arts Center members will have a discounted fee of $15 for two (2) entries. All college and university students are eligible for the Community Arts Center’s member fee of $15 for two (2) entries.
Any work sold through the exhibition will be subject to the following commissions: 30% to the Community Arts Center of Cambria County and 70% to the artist. Please price work accordingly.
