Synopsis: Shakespeare’s classically known play, a comedic tragedy that is not only controversial, but forces actors and audiences to take a deeper look at their own moral compass and question if the play’s antagonist, Shylock, is the villain or the victim. Love, greed, revenge, and prejudice are all present; however, the play reveals that love is
more important than money, that mercy is better than revenge, and that love lasts forever. In the end, cynical voices caution that money rules the world, that mercy alone cannot run people’s lives, and that love can disappear after marriage. “Merchant of Venice” will intrigue those from all walks of life.
This production of The Merchant of Venice is part of the Hope Springs Eternal: The Holocaust Project, which is a collaboration between local organizations aiming to bring unique education and awareness about the Holocaust to Cambria County and the surrounding areas. The project is a combined effort of organizations across the region, who are hosting a variety of events, performances, and showcases to promote Holocaust education.
